Our name is:
Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Our Lady
of Lourdes Court #1772. Our motto is "Unity and Charity".
The national association has been around since 1903 and is the largest
organization of Catholic Women in the Americas. Our patron is the
Blessed Mother, and our purpose is "to participate in the religious,
charitable and educational apostates of the church and the Holy See".
History
of National Organization
Catholic Daughters of
the Americas (CDA) was founded by members of the Knights of Columbus.
Their first name was "Daughters of Isabella". Catholic Daughters became
very involved in overseas duties during World War I. They acted as
nurses, clerks, knitted and sewed for the Red Cross, and held parties
for servicemen.
In 1925 the Knights
of Columbus separated from the CDA & it became an independent
organization, & by 1928 there were courts in Canada and South America.
The CDA was very active
during WW II by making bandages, sewing, buying war bonds, conducting
first aid classes & donating blood. Together they bought and sold over
9 million dollars worth of war bonds. At the same time they were still
active on the home front, promoting peace and democracy, and rallying
against juvenile delinquency and racism.
Over the years, CDA
has supported Catholic University of America's department of American
Catholic History, and the seminary training programs of the North
American College in Rome. It has also contributed to the Holy Father's
foundation to help Catholic Churches in third world countries.
The Catholic Daughters
support Habitat for Humanity with both donations and physical labor, and
donate to Alzheimer's Association of America's "Safe Return" program.
Other relationships include support for Quality of Life concerns such as
domestic violence, addictions, single parents and suicide. CDA takes an
active interest in youth and has junior Catholic Daughter chapters in
some states. They are also involved in legislative issues that affect
quality of life and familes.
We meet on the second
Sunday of each month (September through May) at 12:30 in the Franciscan
room. Everyone brings a snack to share & we eat, have a meeting, draw a
door prize, & then say the rosary together. Marie Mogab usually leads
us in that. It is a wonderful way to get to know other Catholic women
and have fellowship with them. We always have a great time together!
Our group sponsors the annual Mexican Dinner for our big fundraiser of
the year. We also take care of the bookstore/gift shop at our church.
We support St. Joseph's Catholic School with scholarship donations and
by sponsoring the second grade class.
I would like to encourage
the ladies of the church to join our group. Any lady of our parish, St.
Gregory's, Bison, Hennessey, Ringwood, & surrounding rural areas are
welcome to come and be part of our association. You do not have to be
married or part of the Knights of Columbus to be a member.
There are state and
national Catholic Daughters of the Americas which we are part of, with
state & national meetings, a convention and lots of opportunities to do
charitable works. We sponsor a little girl from Honduras through
Catholic Charities, & donate to local and national charities such as
Habitat for Humanity, Morality in Media.
Please join us for a fun and friendly fellowship with other Catholic
women! Feel free to call me or e-mail:
